randal facts.. i mean random

Just as I thought I'd have a quiet rainy weekend to continue lazing around - I mean working on my latest painting - what should happen but that a quick browse over at Randal's blog saw me struck with the '6 Random Things' meme. That'll teach me to go looking for a hit of poetry and madness with my late afternoon cup of tea but, while the watercolor paper dries after the last wash, I'll add to what you'd prefer not to know:

The Rules
1. Link to the person who tagged you. (Done)
2. Post the rules on your blog. (You're reading them)
3. Write six random things about yourself. (As if anyone's interested)
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them. (Who else deserves this?)
5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog. (That's what surfing is for)
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up. (Ditto)

Okay, here goes:

1. I like playing low-key video games or high key ones if I can play along with my best friend. Our all time favorite was Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles where I got to be the magician female Yuke, Castra (that's her with the pointy ones) and he played the Selkie girl warrior, Numb. We've got a brand new version for our wireless DS's.. not as pretty as the Game Cube one but acceptable. I love casting spells and solving puzzles.

As a corollary to this we've been playing Animal Crossing Wild World twice a day every day for three and a half years. It's very Zen like and if you play it long enough and get every item you come to realize that things are valueless but friendship is real.

2. I'm near sighted but refuse to wear glasses unless I'm at the movies, driving or in a strange place. I couldn't stand the idea of contact lenses either with the result I don't see blemishes on people or notice wrinkles. I recognize people at a distance by the way they move.

3. I don't own a cell phone. If you see me walking down the street talking and there's nobody with me I really have gone crazy.

4. I've kept a journal since 2002 where I record books I read, movies we watch, presents we've sent and received and whatever happens to seem worth recalling like the concerts, visits and the time I decided to get an aquarium because the picture was pretty. That was a bad idea suitably noted for future reference.

5. Apart from visiting family and friends I've never purchased a ticket to a faraway place just so I could sit on a beach and stay in a hotel. Instead, I travelled. If a place looked interesting I'd go and live there, including finding work. Now I'm so much older than before it takes a little longer to decide on the next place.. possibly Halifax, NS. If we're lucky our pensions might add up to a decent rent payment which means working for food and sundries. Do you suppose elderly life models are in high demand there?

6. I have a passion for live music and even without the journal I remember every show I've ever seen.. like the night at the Leroy in Pawtucket, RI where guys were throwing their underwear at Blondie. What a thrill for Deborah Harry, eh?

Now we get to choose our six victims.. or possibly willing participants:

Linda
Pagan Sphinx
Spartacus
Gary
Liberality
la Belette Rouge

No obligation here.. just if you have the time and inclination.
All is well.

  1. titter. i could be Castra. she has such unique fashion sense. came by for a pre-catching-up-on-paperwork-before-bedtime story with a cuppa tea. there are a few new facets to you here that i hadn't seen before. :0)

  2. I wish I could say I've traveled but I have not. I just live in the same place year after year. Maybe when we retire we can go gallivanting around and have some fun.

  3. i used to like games where there was a goal- usually to "level" your character and/or to save the world. but now i like open-ended games where I don't have to do anything. that lazy, unmotivated pixel character sitting for hours listening to music while talking to another pixel character is me.
i suppose my "comic" is like keeping a journal.
did you say nova scotia??? isn't it all cold weather, indecipherable language skills and rocks there? whatever happened to hawaii, florida (don't you ever read carl hiasen???) or even something exotic like Trinidad and Tobago? you know, someplace temperate and musical.
but i relate. i'd love to try new zealand and maybe spain or italy someday, for months or years at a time.
    immersion travelling.
    oh oh oh!

  4. Traveling certainly doesn't mean staying at a beachfront hotel then spending days at the beach, at least not at high noon with zillions of local yokels and furrin Griswolds.

I've never played that FF. I think the last one I DID play was either VIII or IX. Nothing beats VI with the dude with the chainsaw and the opera singer.

I don't own a cell phone either, though since I'm completely sane - stop rolling your eyes - I don't talk to myself as I walk down the street. With contacts, I'd be afraid of poking my eyes out.

Thanks for playing, and I had planned to toss some crappy verse up anyway, so how about a wordy watercolor? Don't worry, it's dry.

  5. I like your method of travel. I've always fantasized about doing that, just picking up and going to another country and living there for awhile. We fantasize about it whenever we go somewhere, try to imagine what it would be like to live there.

  6. gfid - Castra is a great character and I love the fact that although she can be a bit clumsy, she's a terrific magician with a big heart.

liberality - I've now stayed in the same place for year after year too. It's almost impossible not to have life tie you down.

sera - Leveling your character and saving the world seems to be the general theme and one I enjoy when it's done well. The Final Fantasy games were a real treat for a long time especially the ones that focussed on fabulous midieval lands with magic and wonderful music. We could, and often did, get lost in them for weeks at a time.

So far as NS is concerned, we'll see. I'm very concerned about the nasty winters but then again, I grew up with nasty winters which didn't seem so bad at the time. I rather like the idea of Cuba too.

randal - FFVI was a great one and I loved the Espers. The opera scene was one of the great all time moments in video game history. Overall I think my personal favorite was FFIX. It's a great example of the perfect rpg with wonderful characters (Vivi :-)), great music and a fine dash of steam punk.

maui girl - How nice of you to visit. As they say, the map is not the land and it's imagination that forges the path.

  8. Love #5. My husband and I have always thought traveling and living places for six months or so after retirement would be nice. I have visions of a small apartment in Italy... We have been fortunate enough to live in two different cities in the last 5.5 years.

By the way: My friend was not happy about a couple of crows that moved into her neighborhood, until I set her straight about crows - thanks to you!

  9. I am so loving coming back to your blog after a bit of a slacking period for me and to find out all these lovely "randal facts" about you. I will of course play. Thanks for the tag.
p.s. Lily loves crows. Every time she sees one she wants to run over and say hello. Most crows run from her as they don't understand her warm intentions. I am sure that your crow wouldn't run from Lily.

  10. linda - I'd hate to tell you how bored I get with my boringness so if I can't think of anything true, I make up the rest :-) BTW - I love your new picture.. so pretty.

    :D wolf - :-)

lol - I used to say that next time around I'd do it first class but that plan may have to wait for another lifetime. I hope you get to have that little place in Italy.. sounds dreamy.

belette - I know you can really go to town on this kind of tag and I look forward to reading it when you do.

No, Crow wouldn't run away from Lily but he probably would pick her up to give her a hug and a belly rub :-)

  11. Thanks for the tag. It's on my long list of to do's. But I probably won't get to it until I return from Mexico. In the meantime here are some pics from my trip here to Mexico and Mexico. All work and no play? We can't have that, no can we.
