one page picture book

For anyone who's wondered recently if I'm still drawing and painting, the answer is yes. Essentially, I'm still working on the story I mentioned a few months ago but doing multiple sequential pictures isn't a simple process for me. I don't want to be making excuses but it's also not that easy to focus with a loud work crew often only a few feet away.

Anyway, just for the fun of it this afternoon I decided to paint a drawing you may remember having seen a while back. It's a story that pretty much tells itself but in case you'd like hearing my take:

A little boy who's been out in the woods has met a new friend. Both of them are wondering if they'll they'll be able to slip home safely without being noticed by any suspicious adults.

  1. I don't see anything unusual, anything to raise suspicions. Kid and friend look perfectly normal to me!

  2. With reference to the boy's friend draped over the shoulder, you're not peering at me through the little pinhole camera thingy on my computer are you? That's exactly how I sometimes feel first thing in the morning! But I have to agree with Martha, I can't see anything unusual, 'cept maybe that fella by the gate. He looks decidedly.... you know!

    1. Although the boy's new friend is a very healthy and attractive member of his species, I'm quite certain you're unlikely to be green. I think the fellow by the gate may have seen such appearances before.

  4. The boy could come here anytime with his new friend. It would be so refreshing to meet someone with a new frame of mind and another vision of our world. Optimistic, I hope. After all, there was already one warm hearted and fun meeting!

    1. I feel the same way, Claude. I had no history of painting pictures of and about children prior to blogging but it seems natural now. There's nothing contradictory about being well informed and staying positive; I just feel sorrow for those who deny magic. It's us who need it - children have their own.

  5. This is the problem I face when I try to walk around with my little friend Aileen the Alien... Your art always has something other than just a picture. I do like it very much.

Thanks for saying that. I'm glad you do.

  6. What a great pic and story! I, too, try to slip by suspicious adults, especially the one's with police uniforms and drug sniffing dogs.

    1. I'm either getting lazy or just plain too distracted by the workmen to get much done lately but I'm happy to know you like this one. This shortest of short stories deserved a little color.

  12. Hi Susan,
Your art and the small, small diamond of a story drew me 25 years back in my life. How I wished i get a friend like this and hid him under my bed!
Thank you and hugs! Be well!
