the scavengers

There's a story in here somewhere but I tend to go off on tangents even I don't expect - the story I was thinking of has no dragon-like beings. Even as this pair appear to be innocuous enough one can never be entirely sure about the intentions of dragons.

I may paint it, or I may just draw another. These days I'm having a hard time maintaining any creative focus. This could be blamed either on the weather (which has been wonderful) or on the news (decidedly not wonderful).

Til next time.

  1. I get so lost in your art, Susan. Your drawings, colored or not, take me back to books I used to read when a kid. The stories were great to read, but it was the artwork that pulled me into other worlds - just like here.

    1. That's such a nice thing to say, Martha. Now that I'm about as far away from young as it's possible to get (and still hold a pencil) I find my favorite things to illustrate are these mysterious circumstances involving children. It's interesting to imagine the inner child of a child :)

  2. I have a LOT of catching up to do...

I love this drawing - the feeling of story behind it, the beings in it, the rich texture and complex space. What I most wanted to know is did you model this on a real space, or is this entirely from your imagination? It's wonderful!

    1. Hi Steve! It's good to see you after too long a time since we last met.

As for the interior here, although I did go in search of photographs taken inside old barns what I gleaned from that search is essentially (well, totally) my own impression of an interesting space. If you look closely you'll surely see some pretty impossible planes and angles, but all in all it works well enough to fool my eye too. Thanks so much for letting me know you like it.

  3. A wondrous drawing, full of so many interesting details, and those dinosaurs are cute happy looking beings.

I too have lost my creative focus, like you also due to the heat and to the awful news.

    1. Thanks Marja-Leena for always saying the nicest things. I've been seeing these 'dinosaurs' as another race of beings a little outside our own consensus reality.

Yes, this year summer has brought both searing heat in the physical sense and in the world event sense. It can be difficult not to despair.

  4. I too love your art; and your dragons wouldn't fire up a matchstick, I'm sure.

Yes, the news is bad, starting with the S. Korean ferry disaster in which so many children dies; the loss of the Malaysian airliner from which nearly 300 people (80 were reputedly children) were seen "falling through the clouds"; and not forgetting the, literally, tens of thousands of children and adults being killed in Syria. As for the crimes being carried out by ISIS, they are unspeakable.

    1. Thanks, Tom. You'll note I was careful to avoid drawing either claws or fangs :)

Yes, there are far too many individual instances to list, but the overall feeling is one of great sadness.

  5. Cute little waifs, the boy is casting an eye on one of the dragons, perhaps he is not sure of their intentions.

    1. Thank goodness the plural of waif isn't waives. If I were more energetic and clever I would have drawn a cartoon strip about this meeting - ie, who is scavenging whom?

  6. Looks like a busy clean-up committee. They do appear well-intentioned.

    Why isn't Crow helping?

And I do get the part about the news.

    Blessings and Bear hugs.

    1. Oh, they are indeed busy. I guess Crow had something else going on that day :)

  9. Hey, these "dragon-like beings" will perfectly fit in your story.
See? Good. Just let your imagination fly. :)

    1. As for whatever this story might become, I probably won't know until all the pictures are done :)
.. I do have two more underway.

True... sometimes they don't really mean the fire to hurt but they do need to breathe after all. Keep your distance.

    1. The worst is when they sneeze. Dragons with colds should definitely be avoided.

  11. Hi Susan,
I am sure there are many stories to emerge with your lovely drawing, as I hear a reverent hiss from one of your friendly dragons and the other is too shy at first, inhabiting an unexpected space.
    Best wishes

    1. I'm glad to know you liked the picture, Lindsay. Sometimes it is best to simply let the pictures tell their stories.

  12. Just remember... Never laugh at dragons!

I love your drawing, it's quite complex and I hope you paint it! Or one like it. I'm here but it may stop me at any letter so be warned. It's my iPad methinks, as well. It's suspicious of it! Are you in all your drawings? ;)

    1. Well, maybe you can chuckle a bit if you cover your mouth.

Yeah, I got a bit over-involved in this drawing. Painting may have to wait a while as I'm busy with a couple of others. Once I get so much ink down coloring almost seem redundant. Me? In my drawings? That never occurred to me :)
