other people's work #296 - Anthony Howe

Anthony Howe lives with his wife on an island off the coast of Washington surrounded by little more than trees, wind, and other natural elements that inspire his incredible kinetic sculptures. He works primarily with stainless steel which he welds to create carefully engineered objects powered by the slightest breeze. His wind-powered, carefully designed kinetic contraptions are so well thought out it’s hard to believe they’re sturdy, welded metal constructions. When a gentle breeze begins to blow, the sculpture’s wind-catching spoons and paddles begin to turn, and the entire piece begins to undulate in fascinating patterns.

But better you see for yourself:

They are mesmerizing.
I have no backyard.
Even if I did...

  1. Yeah, he lives on Orcas (killer whales) island in Puget Sound. A friend lives on the bucolic island, I'll ask if he knows him.
    Hope you're well.
Thunderstorm moving in toward the mountain range just east, temp dropped 11 degrees (F) in the last hour. love it

    1. Long ago, but not so long I've forgotten, I spent six years in coastal BC. The gulf islands are beautiful and the transitting whales were a thrill to see. He picked a good spot.

T-storms can be fun to watch (and listen to) from safety.

    1. Me neither, Sean, but it's fascinating to see a few of them in motion.

  3. Hi Susan,
This guy is truly amazing and I would say some of his work has the potential to create a modern day meditative benefit wherever it is displayed. I found a much smaller version at my former golf club quite refreshing as its movement equated to poetry in motion.
    Best wishes

    1. Hi Lindsay,
I'm glad you think his sculptures (mobiles) are an extraordinary achievement. I agree that watching any one of them would be an intense enough experience to shunt other thoughts aside - at least for a while. The good news is that single point meditation can be done successfully with any object and they don't have to move either. Personally, I prefer fountains or ocean waves for sitting in contemplation, but I imagine the one at your golf club was a treat worth your notice.
      All the best

  4. I'd adore a big one out in a field somewhere! Stunning creations... I wonder if it'd be possible to create them without a computer? Doubtful, not that it matters... thanks for another awesome artist. xxx

    1. Yours is definitely the size of backyard that would be best for one of these and would look great against your fabulous skyways. Speaking as someone who has experienced the difficulties in balancing simple mobiles I wouldn't take this on either.
